SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is a Dark Art.

The idea is that you do magic technical things with your website. Then all the search engines will magically put your website at the top of their search results as a reward for your magic. Regardless of what the hapless user was actually looking for.

That was the idea way back in the late 1990s. Then Google came along in 2000 and put a stop to all that. Web designers all over the world were using the same magic and search results were all over the place.

Google now puts relevant results at the top of its page. And it does so depending on the search text and a whole lot of things Google already knows about you. Two people, sat side-by-side can type in the same search - and get different results!

Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Yandex etc all tweak their algorithms every day. This is because the SEO magicians are getting more and more powerful (and more expensive) all the time. It is a cat (Google) and mouse (SEO magicians) game, and will continue to be.

Or will, until AI makes it all irrelevant.

The overriding principle all this time has been - "Is it a good website?". If it is, then it gets onto the first page of a set of search results. Otherwise, it doesn't.

A good website is difficult to define though, and Google (mainly) has many, many documents trying to define it.

We at Lilac Pixel try to do some of the most basic of SEO magic with your website. This involves at least making the software clean and simple.

Then we add metadata that is relevant to you, like opening times, phone, email and address. Some of these things go into a hidden part of the website, and Google picks that up and may use it in a side panel. Google "Bardic Vintage Books" - one of ours!
